Meet the TI-84 Evo Graphing Calculator

Educators consistently seek tools that enable students to effectively visualize and grasp mathematical concepts, which is why graphing calculators have long been a reliable resource in classrooms. The updated TI-84 Evo graphing calculator from Texas Instruments continues this legacy by offering an easy-to-use, distraction-free design that keeps students concentrated on learning, rather than navigating through apps or screens.

The TI-84 Evo, with its enhanced processing speed, color-coded graphing, and user-friendly navigation, makes mathematical concepts from algebra to trigonometry more accessible. Katherine Widrick, a math teacher for both middle and high school students in Virginia, reflects on how this effective tool has boosted student engagement, deepened understanding of topics like domain and range, and provided meaningful hands-on graphing experiences. Here’s her review for Teacher Picks.

For which grade levels and subject areas do you think the TI-84 Evo graphing calculator is best suited?

The TI-84 Evo is ideal for subjects like Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus, extending even to college-level mathematics. Having used a TI-83 during my math-major courses, I can attest that these calculators are perfect for any middle or high school mathematics classroom.

How did you and your students use the TI-84 Evo calculator in your classes?

In my class, the calculator was instrumental in illustrating the domain and range of continuous and asymptotic functions, serving as a foundation for teaching Algebra 2 content to my Geometry students. We explored numerous function graphs, using the calculator’s graph and table features to define their domain and range.

How did your students react to the calculator?

The students absolutely loved it. Engaging with this hands-on tool kept many of them actively involved in the learning process. They enjoyed the experience of using a handheld graphing calculator and even evaluated the pros and cons compared to online versions.

How would you sum up your overall experience?

The students were thoroughly engaged and gained substantial knowledge on using a handheld graphing calculator. They began to understand how to use it to determine various domains and ranges of continuous functions. We also delved into trigonometry functions, including vertical and horizontal asymptotes.

How easy were the calculators to use and implement in your classroom?

Using the calculators was straightforward! As someone who used them during my math career, teaching their use was second nature. My students, who were new to handheld graphing calculators, quickly adapted and remained focused throughout.

What were the top two features you liked most about the TI-84 Evo graphing calculator?

I appreciate the calculator’s capability to display graphs and tables with enhanced processor speed, and its compatibility with STEM accessories, which benefits our school’s STEM club. The faster processing was particularly useful for comparing multiple graphs simultaneously. Additionally, the rechargeable battery is a significant advantage.

What makes the TI-84 Evo special or unique compared to other calculators you’ve used?

The icon navigation is notably easier compared to the TI-83 I previously used. The inclusion of a rechargeable battery is another impressive feature. The ability to color-code graphs is a substantial improvement over my older black-and-white model, and the increased processing speed is transformative.

How will the TI-84 Evo save you time or make teaching easier?

This upgraded system boasts the fastest processing speed I’ve encountered in a handheld graphing calculator. Its functions are intuitive and easy to locate. Should any challenges arise, the user guide and online help offer rapid assistance. For educators looking to reduce students’ screen time with Chromebooks, this device is a promising alternative. Studies show that excessive screen time does not enhance students’ knowledge. A handheld calculator effectively bridges the gap from screen to knowledge.

How do you plan to use the TI-84 Evo in the future?

I intend to incorporate the TI-84 Evo in our units on circles and triangles, particularly focusing on right-triangle trigonometry, and while introducing Algebra 2 content. Observing these topics on a graphing calculator is highly beneficial. Furthermore, I may use it with my Math 8 students when discussing topics like tips, taxes, and discounts, utilizing its money function keys.
