Corporate America has been delivering exceptional profits during this busy earnings season. As the S&P 500 hovers near fresh records, it’s important to take a moment to appreciate the impressive performance of companies on the bottom line.

According to a recent note from FactSet, second quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies are on track to increase by a remarkable 50% year over year. This growth rate is the highest seen since the second quarter of 2021. Creative Planning chief strategist Charlie Bilello noted, “We’ve never seen earnings growth this high outside of post-recessionary rebounds. This is an unprecedented boom fueled by massive EPS gains in big tech, including markups in SpaceX/Anthropic.”

Several key stats from FactSet stand out, including the fact that 88% of S&P 500 companies have reported their second quarter results, with 86% reporting earnings per share (EPS) above estimates. This is higher than the five-year and 10-year averages, showcasing a strong performance across the board.

In aggregate, companies are reporting earnings 29.2% above estimates, the highest reported earnings surprise since FactSet began tracking this metric in 2008. This further emphasizes the exceptional profit numbers being achieved by corporate America.

One notable highlight comes from Amazon’s second quarter results, which included a gain of $53.4 billion in other income, primarily due to investments in tech companies like model builder and customer Anthropic. This AlphaSpace stat underscores the impact of strategic investments on overall earnings.

Despite challenges such as higher oil prices and ongoing investments in AI, corporate resiliency has shone through in the second quarter profit showing. Wall Street strategists have praised this performance, highlighting the strength and adaptability of companies in the current economic landscape.

In conclusion, the second quarter earnings season has been a resounding success for corporate America, with profits exceeding expectations and setting new records. The unprecedented boom in earnings growth, particularly in big tech companies, demonstrates the resilience and innovation of businesses in today’s market environment.
