Ivanovic’s triumphs in 2008 were followed by a series of injuries, leading her to drop out of the WTA Top 20 the next year. Despite returning to the Top 5 in 2014, she retired in 2016 at the age of 29.
In a recent discussion with the Serbian outlet (Ne)uspjeh Prvaka, Ivanovic opened up about the mental health challenges she faced as her career wound down, explaining,
“During the last years of my career, I experienced very severe panic attacks whenever I had to walk onto the court. I never talked about it, but the panic attacks were incredibly intense. People would wonder what suddenly happened in the middle of a match, why my game would fall apart but the truth is that I’d be overcome by panic and simply couldn’t go on. Then I’d be overwhelmed by the fear of having to go out and play in front of people again the next day.”
She further elaborated that her decision to retire was a gradual process, noting,
“It had been building for a long time. I remember that when I was in my twenties, I said I wasn’t the kind of person who would play until I was 40. That never appealed to me because I knew there were other things I wanted to do in life.”
Following her retirement from tennis, Ivanovic briefly managed a beauty brand named ‘Ana Ivanovic Natural Performance’. However, she closed the business in 2025 and is currently focusing on her three children, Luka, Leon, and Theo.
