Susan Smith, the convicted murderer who infamously drowned her two young sons in 1994, faced yet another setback on Wednesday as her bid for parole was rejected by the parole board. Emotions ran high as the 53-year-old was returned to her prison cell at Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Witnesses described Smith as visibly upset and agitated, with one onlooker noting that she appeared to have thrown a tantrum upon hearing the news. Despite her emotional outburst, Smith did not receive much sympathy from her fellow inmates, who reportedly found the situation amusing. It was evident that Smith’s focus was on herself rather than reflecting on her heinous crime and its impact on her sons.

During the parole hearing, which was conducted remotely via Zoom, Smith tearfully apologized for her actions and expressed remorse for the tragic loss of her sons, Alex and Michael. She admitted to losing touch with reality when she committed the unthinkable act of strapping her children into their car seats and letting them drown in a lake.

Despite her plea for mercy and claims of seeking forgiveness from a higher power, Smith failed to take full responsibility for her actions, instead shifting blame onto others. This lack of accountability did not sway the parole board, which promptly denied her request for release.

Smith’s crime shocked the nation in 1994 when she falsely claimed that a black man had abducted her and her sons in a carjacking. This led to a widespread manhunt and a public plea for the safe return of the boys. However, the truth eventually came to light when Smith confessed to drowning her sons in the lake.

Now serving a life sentence, Smith will have the opportunity to reapply for parole every two years, putting the burden on the family of her victims to oppose her release and ensure that she remains behind bars. The legacy of her heinous crime continues to haunt those who remember the tragic loss of young lives at the hands of a mother who betrayed her maternal duties.
