Alpha Compute, an AI infrastructure company, has recently announced a major development in the world of data centers. CEO Brittany Kaiser revealed that the company has signed a binding term sheet to acquire land and natural gas rights in Pennsylvania for a staggering $55 million. This investment will pave the way for the development of a massive 200-megawatt data center campus.
The demand for artificial intelligence computing is skyrocketing, leading to a rush for power supplies across the United States. Data center developers are now opting to secure their own energy sources rather than rely on grid connections. Pennsylvania, with its abundant natural gas reserves from the Marcellus shale basin, existing power infrastructure, and proximity to major population centers on the East Coast, has emerged as a prime location for data center development. In fact, tech giant Amazon announced plans for a $20 billion investment in the state last year.
Alpha Compute’s new site in northern Pennsylvania is expected to include gas-fired power generation and is set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2027. The facility has the potential to expand to generate up to one gigawatt of power. This project represents a unique approach that combines data center development with natural gas production and on-site electricity generation, a trend that is gaining popularity as utilities struggle to meet the demands of large AI facilities.
The agreement gives Alpha Compute an exclusive option to acquire the assets, pending due diligence, financing, permitting, and final agreements. The company anticipates closing the deal after a 60-day diligence period. Local approvals will also be necessary for the project to move forward, as some communities have tightened restrictions on data centers due to their high electricity and water consumption. Despite this, Kaiser mentioned that local communities have been receptive to the proposal.
While Alpha Compute is known for providing confidential-computing services, this project marks the company’s first foray into data center development in the United States. The initial $55 million investment is just the beginning, with an estimated $500 million needed for the build-out of the data center campus over several years.
This groundbreaking project highlights the growing importance of energy security in the world of data centers and underscores the innovative approaches that companies like Alpha Compute are taking to meet the evolving needs of the industry. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the world of AI infrastructure.
