Russell Wilson, the billionaire founder of CoinSpot, has been making headlines recently due to a legal battle with an ex-employee. CoinSpot, one of Australia’s largest cryptocurrency trading exchanges, reported a $270 million net profit in the 2025 financial year. However, on Aug. 10, a local media outlet reported that Wilson has sued a former employee for allegedly stealing around $500,000 from the exchange.

According to court documents filed by CoinSpot’s parent company, Casey Block Services, the ex-employee, Iresh Pawan Perera, is accused of transferring $478,932 out of the company into his personal bank account across 76 transactions over two years. The lawsuit claims that Perera converted CoinSpot’s digital currency into cash for his own use by exchanging it. As a result, Perera’s employment was terminated immediately due to material breaches of his employment agreement. Perera has yet to file a defense in response to the allegations.

CoinSpot is seeking damages worth $478,932, in addition to interest, in the ongoing legal battle with its former employee. The case is set to resume in September. A spokesperson for CoinSpot stated that they are unable to provide further details on the matter while it is still under legal proceedings.

In light of the situation, CoinSpot emphasized that they enforce robust safeguards to ensure the security of operations and assets. The company takes the security of customers’ holdings very seriously and has not had any customer funds impacted on their platform. CoinSpot has a zero-tolerance policy for fraud and is committed to working closely with law enforcement to protect its users.

This story was originally reported by TheStreet on Aug 10, 2026, and first appeared in the MARKETS section. For more information on this developing story, stay tuned for updates as the legal proceedings unfold.
