Marvel Studios has announced that Maya Boyd will portray Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm, in the upcoming “X-Men” movie reboot. This marks the 23-year-old Broadway actor’s first appearance in a feature film, making her an exciting new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The casting news was revealed as Marvel introduced the initial lineup for the new “X-Men” film, which features Sadie Sink, Kit Connor, Christopher Abbott, Samara Weaving, Inde Navarrette, and Adam Driver.

For Boyd, the role signifies a significant leap from the Broadway stage to a major Hollywood franchise. She has a strong background in musical theater, having recently played a key role in August Wilson’s “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.” Her upcoming role as one of Marvel’s iconic mutants will help introduce the “X-Men” into the MCU.

Marvel Studios made the announcement at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where studio president Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier introduced the first set of actors for the new “X-Men” movie.

Boyd will embody Storm, a powerful mutant with the ability to control the weather and a significant leader within the X-Men universe. In the comics, Storm is an African-born mutant with a pivotal role in the team’s history.

This role has a storied cinematic past, with Halle Berry originally portraying Storm in earlier “X-Men” films, and Alexandra Shipp playing a younger version in “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Dark Phoenix.” Maya Boyd becomes the third actor to take on this iconic role in a major “X-Men” film series.

Boyd’s casting is particularly noteworthy as it marks her debut in the film industry. Unlike her new MCU colleagues, Boyd does not have a lengthy film resume, having spent her professional career primarily in theater.

From Broadway to Marvel

Before joining the “X-Men” cast, Boyd was already carving out a reputation on Broadway.

She made her Broadway debut in “Merrily We Roll Along” during her senior year at the University of Michigan, serving as an onstage swing and understudying the role of Gussie, which she described as an extremely challenging experience.

In an interview with Theatrely in April 2026, Boyd shared that working professionally while still completing her education allowed her to maintain a learning mindset. She credited this experience with teaching her how to present herself as an artist and a professional.

Following her Broadway debut, Boyd starred in “& Juliet,” taking on the title role, before transitioning to straight theater with “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” where she played Molly Cunningham in the Broadway revival directed by Debbie Allen.

This trajectory has equipped Boyd with skills in singing, dancing, and dramatic acting, all of which may prove beneficial for the physically demanding role of a superhero.

Debbie Allen Played a Role in Maya Boyd’s Journey

An interesting link exists between Boyd’s theater work and her upcoming role.

At 13, Boyd first met Debbie Allen at a summer program at Allen’s dance academy in Los Angeles. At the time, she primarily considered herself a dancer and hadn’t envisioned a career in musical theater or acting.

Allen encouraged Boyd to explore her singing abilities, despite Boyd’s initial reluctance to perform outside of her family. Years later, Boyd would collaborate with Allen professionally on “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.”

Reflecting on that early encounter, Boyd described it as a pivotal moment that eventually led to her career in musical theater.

Now, her journey has taken an unexpected turn into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Boyd is part of a strong first wave of the “X-Men” cast announcements.

Sadie Sink will take on the role of Jean Grey, having previously introduced the character in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” “Heartstopper” star Kit Connor will play Scott Summers/Cyclops, while Christopher Abbott will portray Professor Charles Xavier.

Samara Weaving joins as Emma Frost, and Inde Navarrette will play Rogue. Adam Driver was also announced via a video during the D23 presentation as Nathaniel Milbury, a character linked to the villainous Mr. Sinister.

Marvel has indicated that more casting announcements will follow as the reboot continues to develop.

Director Jake Schreier, known for “Thunderbolts,” will direct the movie, which is set to be released exclusively in theaters on May 5, 2028.

A New Era for Storm Begins

Storm is a pivotal character in the “X-Men” universe. By choosing Boyd, Marvel has entrusted her with a significant role. Storm’s African heritage, commanding presence, formidable powers, and legacy as a leader make her a beloved character among fans.

For Maya Boyd, this opportunity marks the beginning of what could be an expansive film career.

Having already established herself on Broadway, Boyd is now set to make her mark on a much larger stage with her debut in the MCU.
