Step into The Magician’s Room, where you’ll find captivating imagery such as a muscular horse with a serpent draped across its back, a group of headless birds diving toward a central star, and a fluffy white rabbit encircled by an unblinking ring of eyes. This surreal and transitional space houses a new collection by Paris-based artist Lou Benesch.
Running until August 22 at Hashimoto Contemporary, this solo exhibition draws inspiration from the tarot’s Magician card. The Magician, a cunning wizard known for connecting the celestial and earthly realms, is poised for transformation and movement. Benesch channels the Magician’s penchant for action and mysticism into an array of ethereal works crafted on found and antique materials.

Utilizing vintage board games and chalkboards as aged frames, the artist infuses life into these energetic mixed-media compositions. Antique papers showcase striking two-dimensional portrayals of hybrid creatures and mystical events. The Magician’s Room seamlessly blends the past with the present and the spiritual with the physical, creating an enchanting world where dreams and reality converge.
For those in San Francisco, visit Hashimoto Contemporary to experience the exhibition before it concludes on August 22. Alternatively, follow Benesch’s work on Instagram.
