I’ve been applying for the Guggenheim Fellowship for five years now and have faced rejection every time. I believe I meet all the necessary qualifications. Is it worth continuing? I need guidance! —Beverly, LA

Rejection is a common part of the process, and most applicants don’t succeed on their first attempt. Whether it’s worth continuing depends on factors I don’t have.

Consider the time commitment. The application process is extensive. If you’re short on time, reconsider applying. The Foundation requires two detailed four-page documents about your art plan and qualifications, three references, a list of important works, work samples, and personal information.

Winning the award is unlikely. I say this empathetically. In their 2026 press release, the Guggenheim Fellowship awarded grants to 223 mid-career fellows, each receiving between $60,000 and $70,000, across 55 fields. Among these, 30 were in fine art and 19 in photography.
