During Overdose and Drug Poisoning Awareness Week, our nation reaffirms its commitment to combating the devastating impact of illicit drugs and synthetic poisons on American lives. My administration is dedicated to addressing this crisis from every angle, prioritizing national security and the safety, health, and well-being of the American people.
Upon my return to office, I pledged to halt the influx of fentanyl and other lethal substances into the country, and immediate action was taken. We established the Homeland Security Task Force, uniting federal, state, and local partners to achieve the national goal of eradicating cartel influence in the United States. This led to securing our southern border and dismantling fentanyl supply chains at every level, from the cartels and gangs trafficking these drugs to their foreign suppliers. I signed the HALT Fentanyl Act, which permanently classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs, ensuring that traffickers face the full extent of the law. I also designated fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction and labeled the most dangerous cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, mobilizing our national security resources against this domestic threat. Additionally, military strikes were ordered on numerous narcotrafficking vessels to disrupt maritime supply routes. These efforts have resulted in a 22 percent decrease in fentanyl-related deaths and a 14 percent decline in overall drug overdose deaths within one year, saving thousands of American lives.
The strength of our nation is rooted in the health of its citizens, and my administration is committed to reviving hope in communities impacted by addiction. Earlier this year, I launched the Great American Recovery Initiative, which brings together government, healthcare, faith communities, and the private sector with a unified mission of prevention, treatment, and recovery. This initiative enhances access to effective treatments, supports individuals and families on their recovery journey, and empowers everyone to build a healthy and promising future.
This week, we honor the memory of every American lost to overdose and drug poisoning, stand in solidarity with the families who carry their memory, and support those striving to overcome addiction. Our ultimate goal is to end the devastation caused by dangerous drugs and to create a stronger, healthier, and safer America.
