Why ‘How Long Should It Take To Fall Asleep?’ Is The Wrong Question

When people think of sleep issues, they often imagine lying awake in bed, staring at the ceiling, watching the clock tick away precious hours. This perception is common and often accurate for many. However, this view only represents part of the problem, and overlooking the other half is why many sleep products are discarded.

What Normal Actually Looks Like

Sleep researchers refer to the time between turning out the lights and falling asleep as sleep onset latency. For healthy adults, this period typically ranges from ten to twenty minutes. Falling asleep in under five minutes consistently suggests severe sleep deprivation rather than a unique ability.

When sleep onset consistently takes more than half an hour, individuals often label themselves as poor sleepers.

This measurement, however, does not account for what happens after falling asleep. Someone who takes forty minutes to sleep but stays asleep has a different issue than someone who falls asleep quickly but wakes up at 3:10 a.m. Both might search for solutions online and receive identical product recommendations.

The British Complication

The UK has a unique situation. While melatonin is available over the counter in most of Europe and the US, it requires a prescription in Britain. Commonly prescribed sleep aids, such as z-drugs and older benzodiazepines, come with NHS guidelines that advise against long-term use.

This creates a middle ground filled with botanical supplements, which vary in quality. Some are well-formulated, while many are underdosed or contain poorly combined ingredients.

What Actually Acts On Falling Asleep

Valerian root, hops, and lemon balm have a longstanding history in European herbal medicine for aiding sleep, often used together rather than individually. They address an overactive nervous system at bedtime and should be taken shortly before sleep.

Valerian root is traditionally used to support natural sleep, although its health claims are pending authorization and used under transitional provisions.

These ingredients are designed for evening use, providing immediate effects without addressing underlying stressors or preventing early-morning awakenings.

Why The Second Problem Needs Something Else

Waking in the early hours is often linked to the overnight cortisol curve. Ideally, cortisol remains low during early sleep stages and rises towards morning. An early or steep curve can cause premature awakening, making it hard to return to sleep.

This pattern does not change overnight; it takes weeks to adjust. Magnesium, along with vitamins B6 and B12, play a role here by supporting nervous system function, psychological health, and reducing fatigue. Magnesium levels build gradually, so solutions in this area consider a longer timeframe.

The Two-Speed Approach

The Hypnozan 8H Program in the UK uses a dual approach. It includes two bottles to be used in the same evening: a botanical capsule with valerian root, lemon balm, motherwort, and hops taken half an hour before bed, and a magnesium bisglycinate with vitamin B6 taken earlier with food.

The strategy addresses two different issues on separate schedules. The botanical component works the first night, while the magnesium aspect, which builds over time, helps establish consistent good sleep rather than just sporadic improvements. This is why it is recommended as a continuous program rather than a single-use remedy.

The Unglamorous Part

While supplements can help, they do not replace foundational practices, which are more effective: maintaining a consistent wake time, getting early daylight exposure, avoiding caffeine in the evening, and moderating alcohol, which can shorten sleep onset but disrupts the latter half of the night. Persistent sleep issues with daytime symptoms warrant a GP consultation rather than relying on commercial products.

For those who have established these basics but still struggle with sleep, identifying the specific sleep issue is crucial. It can mean the difference between choosing a solution that works for your sleep pattern or one that does not.
