What it covers, what it costs, and how to compare plans

When planning a vacation, the last thing on your mind is probably a medical emergency. Most people think of travel insurance as a way to protect against flight cancellations or lost luggage. However, a serious medical emergency while abroad can quickly turn into a financial nightmare. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cost of an international air ambulance can range from $30,000 to $250,000.

This is where emergency medical evacuation insurance comes into play. This type of insurance is designed to cover the costs associated with transporting you to a suitable medical facility if you become seriously ill or injured during your trip. In some cases, it may even arrange for transportation back to the U.S. once your condition stabilizes.

It’s important to note that emergency medical evacuation insurance is different from other common travel insurance benefits. While trip cancellation insurance reimburses prepaid trip costs if you need to cancel for a covered reason, and travel medical insurance covers healthcare costs during your trip, emergency medical evacuation insurance specifically focuses on covering the costs of medical transportation in the event of a serious emergency.

When it comes to what medical evacuation insurance actually covers, it’s essential to understand that your regular health insurance or premium credit card may not provide adequate coverage for emergency medical transportation abroad. Most U.S. health insurance plans offer limited coverage outside the country, and Medicare generally does not cover healthcare outside the U.S. Emergency medical evacuation insurance typically covers the cost of transportation to a suitable medical facility, as well as logistical support such as coordinating with local doctors, ambulance companies, and your family back home.

One key consideration when choosing a medical evacuation insurance plan is whether it provides coverage to the “nearest appropriate facility” or allows you to choose the “hospital of your choice.” The former means that the insurer’s medical team will decide where you need to go in the event of a medical emergency, while the latter gives you the option to be transported to your preferred hospital back home once you are stable enough to travel.

There are several ways to obtain medical evacuation coverage, including through comprehensive travel insurance policies that include emergency medical evacuation benefits, standalone travel medical plans that focus solely on emergency medical care and evacuation, annual medevac memberships that arrange transport for you in the event of a medical emergency, global or expat health insurance plans, and certain premium travel credit cards that offer emergency evacuation coverage.

The cost of medical evacuation insurance can vary depending on factors such as your age, the length of your trip, your destination, and coverage limits. Standalone travel medical insurance typically averages around $87 for a 17-day trip, while comprehensive travel insurance, which includes coverage for trip cancellations and nonrefundable trip costs, can cost about 4% to 10% of the total insured trip cost.

When comparing different medical evacuation insurance plans, it’s important to consider factors such as coverage limits, primary vs. secondary coverage, transportation location (nearest facility vs. hospital of choice), adventure sports exclusions, preexisting condition rules, and 24/7 emergency assistance.

Ultimately, medical evacuation insurance is essential for international travelers, particularly those visiting remote destinations, engaging in risky activities, seniors or individuals with preexisting health conditions, or taking cruises. In the event of a medical emergency while abroad, having the right insurance coverage can provide peace of mind and financial protection.
