Emmy voting has concluded, just in time.
Each year, over 27,000 members of the Television Academy—including actors, editors, showrunners, and composers—cast their votes to determine the Emmy winners. However, very few of them openly share their true opinions.
Likewise, as we do with Oscar voters, we reached out to some of them directly.
As the 78th Emmy Awards voting period closed, Variety engaged with numerous Academy members across its 31 professional peer groups, which are categorized by craft, ranging from performers to picture editors. We assured each participant anonymity for complete honesty. This gave us a glimpse into the potential outcomes when awards are distributed over the first two weekends in September.
Each voter was asked the same four questions off the ballot: their biggest snub, the most excessive FYC campaign, the network or streamer having the best season, and which win would significantly impact the industry. Their responses conclude each entry.
In “area awards” categories, such as hosted nonfiction and variety series, voters can choose multiple nominees by simply answering: Does this show deserve an Emmy? Yes or No. Interestingly, none of the voters Variety spoke with checked “Yes” for every nominee, and only four selected more than one. This indicates that voters are treating these categories as a “may the best show win” competition rather than spreading the accolades.
Ballots have been edited for brevity and, where necessary, to maintain anonymity.
The opinions expressed are those of the voters themselves. They may be contradictory or occasionally indefensible, but for the purposes of this article, they are the only ones that count.
It is important to note that these 10 ballots are not representative of an official presidential poll. They are barely even a focus group. However, they provide a window into a small, unscientific, and anecdotal sample of a voting body comprising over 20,000 industry professionals. This should not be mistaken for a prediction, and the voters themselves would likely agree (with one exception).
These discussions reveal that many voters see only a fraction of the field. They tend to vote based on titles they feel they should choose, often those that are widely discussed. This makes Emmy voters less informed compared to the Oscar voters I survey annually, who generally demonstrate more thorough research.
When considering what these 10 individuals shared—and their suspicions about their colleagues—a pattern emerges that aligns with pundit predictions.
“The Pitt” seems set to dominate the drama category. In comedy, “Widow’s Bay” appears to have an edge over “Hacks,” the outgoing champion. In the limited series category, the anticipated “Beef” vs. “DTF St. Louis” face-off is genuine, yet “The Beast in Me” is gaining favor as a potential spoiler.
The initial two nights celebrating artisans and the Governors Gala are scheduled for September 5-6. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on NBC on September 14.
Final Emmy predictions will be released before the first ceremony date.
