Apple has broadened its iPhone collection, reshaping the narrative around its flagship devices. The introduction of the iPhone Duo, Apple’s inaugural foldable phone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, offers three unique smartphone experiences within its high-end lineup. The iPhone Duo introduces a novel design, while the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max advance Apple’s classic design by enhancing photography, performance, battery longevity, and artificial intelligence.
These releases are significant because they illustrate Apple’s pursuit of dual strategies. The iPhone Duo emphasizes flexibility, a larger display, and innovative interactions with cameras and apps, whereas the Pro models cater to creators and advanced users seeking greater control. All three models feature Apple’s latest A20 Pro chip, iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and the enhanced Siri AI, each utilizing these technologies uniquely.
iPhone Duo Brings a Foldable Design To the iPhone
The iPhone Duo is the standout addition to Apple’s smartphone offerings. When unfolded, it boasts a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, marking the largest screen ever on an iPhone, offering an expansive space for gaming, video, reading, and multitasking.
This inner screen is 50 percent larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It features a nano-texture finish that reduces glare and reflections and minimizes the visibility of the crease. A new FaceTime camera is discreetly integrated beneath the display, maintaining an uninterrupted screen.
When folded, the iPhone Duo transforms into a compact device with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, which Apple claims provides 90 percent of the display area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, enabling content to scale smoothly as users switch between them.
Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and can reach up to 3,000 nits of peak brightness outdoors. Apple plans to introduce Apple Pencil support via USB-C later this year, allowing users to write, sketch, and annotate on either screen.
Built Around a Precision Hinge
The foldable design of the iPhone Duo is more than just an additional screen. It employs a precision hinge composed of over 100 parts, providing balanced support for the display and facilitating a smooth folding action.
The enclosure is crafted from Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, while the hinge cover contrasts with a micro-blasted texture. Ceramic Shield protects the rear, and Ceramic Shield 2, with three times the scratch resistance, covers the outer display.
Apple has also created a multilayer protection system for the folding display, incorporating a scratch-resistant coating, nano-textured layer, high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate to absorb folding stresses. The custom polymer in the cover layer reportedly offers 40 percent greater stiffness than industry alternatives.
The iPhone Duo is rated IP68, ensuring resistance to water, splashes, and dust.
A Camera System Designed Around Folding
The iPhone Duo’s camera system takes full advantage of its foldable design. Its 48MP Fusion Main camera captures images up to 48MP, with zero shutter lag and a 2x Telephoto option offering optical-quality zoom. It boasts a large sensor, fast aperture, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, and a new computational photography pipeline to enhance detail and low-light performance.
The 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera supports macro photography and broader perspectives, while the Center Stage front camera automatically frames subjects in various orientations.
The foldable nature of the device enables unique features not possible on a standard iPhone. Duo Preview allows subjects to view the live camera feed on the outer display, and users can take selfies with the rear cameras, viewing themselves while framing the shot.
Smart Take uses AI to analyze scenes and capture images when subjects are ready. Duo FaceTime lets nearby people join a call through the outer display, and Kid Cue can display Peanuts animations to grab a child’s attention.
Video capabilities include 4K recording at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision, offering slow-motion playback adjustments after capture. Cinematic effects can be applied post-recording at up to 60 fps.
iPhone 18 Pro Takes the Camera Further
Alongside the foldable option, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have been enhanced for traditional smartphone photography. A key upgrade is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, introducing aperture control to the iPhone.
With six laser-cut blades, the camera can switch between four aperture settings for automatic lighting and depth-of-field adjustments. Users seeking more control can manually set the aperture in the Camera app.
The Pro controls also grant access to shutter speed, white balance, and histogram data. Enhanced Photographic Styles allow for texture and grain adjustments, while video improvements include post-capture cinematic effects, 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse, and an advanced Audio Mix system.
Apple Adds a New Approach to Photo Authenticity
One of the distinctive features added to the Pro models is Apple Reference Image. This feature allows the Main camera to sign the sensor data linked to a photograph, enabling Private Cloud Compute to create an unchangeable reference image.
Users can view this reference next to the edited photograph in the Photos app, offering a comparison between the original capture and the edited version. Apple highlights this feature as particularly beneficial for photographers, photojournalists, and those wary of distinguishing genuine photographs from AI-generated or altered images.
A20 Pro Powers the Entire Lineup
The iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max all integrate the A20 Pro chip, Apple’s new processor built on a 2-nanometer process. It features a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Compared to the A19 Pro, the CPU is reportedly up to 20 percent faster, the GPU up to 40 percent faster, and the Neural Engine provides double the compute power for on-device AI. Memory bandwidth has increased by 50 percent.
Thermal management is crucial to performance. The iPhone Duo pairs the A20 Pro with a custom vapor chamber, while the Pro models employ a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the previous version. Apple claims this system allows for a 40 percent improvement in sustained performance on the Pro models.
Battery Life Gets a Substantial Upgrade
The iPhone Duo incorporates a dual-battery system, with high-energy batteries on each side of the device. It can provide up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, or up to 24 hours when both screens are used equally.
It can charge to 50 percent in about 20 minutes with a wired connection, or approximately 30 minutes wirelessly using MagSafe or Qi2.
The iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours. The Pro Max features a notable charging enhancement: five minutes of wired charging can yield roughly seven hours of video playback.
iOS 27 Makes the Hardware Feel Different
iOS 27 unifies these devices, adapting to their distinct hardware capabilities. On the iPhone Duo, controls shift to the sides of the interface to conserve vertical space, while Split View permits two apps to operate simultaneously. Users can also open two windows from the same app, like Safari, and save app combinations for later use.
StandBy has been significantly upgraded, functioning on both the inner and outer displays even when the phone is not charging.
On the Pro models, the Dynamic Island feature becomes more compact and functional, displaying up to three Live Activities at once.
Apple Intelligence and the enhanced Siri AI experience extend across the lineup. Siri can leverage personal context from messages, emails, photos, and other apps, comprehend on-screen content, and act accordingly. Apple emphasizes privacy through on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone Duo is priced starting at $1,999 in the U.S. with options for 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage. Available in star white and night sky, pre-orders begin October 16, with availability starting October 23.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max begins at $1,299. Both are available in black, silver, glacier, and a new burgundy finish, with pre-orders starting September 12 and availability on September 18.
This expansion results in a more diverse iPhone family than ever before.
