This is the new progressive strategy for warring with Trump

Progressive Democrats are facing a new challenge as they grapple with the possibility of a second term for Donald Trump. In a shift in strategy, some liberal elected officials and operatives are considering a different approach to dealing with the president. They are now willing to entertain the idea of working with Trump on certain populist, working-class proposals that align with their own priorities.

The idea is simple: if Trump follows through on promises that benefit the working class, progressives can take some credit for pushing him in that direction. If he fails to deliver, they can criticize him for it. This new approach marks a departure from the previous stance of outright resistance to Trump’s policies.

For example, Rep. Pramila Jayapal has expressed willingness to work with Trump on antitrust measures. Senator Richard Blumenthal sees potential for collaboration on tackling corporate consolidations, while Senator Bernie Sanders has indicated support for Trump’s promise to cap credit card interest rates. Even Senator Elizabeth Warren, known for her staunch opposition to Trump, is open to working with him on issues like consumer credit interest rates.

However, progressives are not abandoning their core principles. They remain critical of Trump’s divisive rhetoric, harmful policies, and perceived threats to democracy. They will continue to oppose the majority of his agenda while selectively engaging with him on issues that align with their values.

Despite the challenges posed by a Republican-controlled Congress, progressives see an opportunity to influence policy by holding Trump accountable for his promises. They believe that his voters expect him to follow through on his populist campaign pledges, such as protecting Social Security and Medicare, ending taxes on tips, and capping credit card interest rates.

Some progressives, like Rep. Summer Lee, remain skeptical of Trump’s willingness to uphold his promises. However, they acknowledge the importance of trying to hold him accountable. Senator Peter Welch emphasizes the importance of advocating for policies that benefit working-class people, even in a challenging political environment.

The landscape of progressive resistance has evolved since Trump’s first term. While there will still be instances of strong opposition, there is also a recognition of the potential for collaboration on certain issues. Progressives are prepared to engage with Trump where there is common ground, while remaining vigilant in their defense of core values.

In the end, the goal for progressives is clear: to advance policies that benefit the working class and hold Trump accountable for his promises. By navigating the complexities of a second Trump presidency with a nuanced approach, progressives hope to make a meaningful impact on the lives of millions of Americans.
