Brian Kelly left Notre Dame for LSU to win a title. Why is he further away from that than ever?

Brian Kelly’s tenure as head coach at LSU has hit a low point with a third consecutive loss and heated sideline exchanges with players in Gainesville two weeks ago. The loss to Florida ended Kelly’s streak of seven straight seasons with at least 10 wins, raising concerns about the future of the Tigers.

Kelly’s first season at LSU was promising, with an SEC West title and a win over Alabama. The second season saw a Heisman Trophy winner and 10 victories. However, the Tigers are currently 7-4 heading into their regular-season finale against Oklahoma, marking a disappointing year for the team.

The decision to leave Notre Dame for LSU was a bold move for Kelly, who expressed his desire to win a national championship with the Tigers. However, questions have arisen about whether Kelly is the right fit for the job and if he can effectively recruit and coach the players needed for success in the SEC.

A major setback for LSU was five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood flipping his commitment from LSU to Michigan, raising concerns about the team’s ability to attract top talent. Additionally, Kelly’s coaching style and management approach have come under scrutiny, with some questioning his ability to connect with players and build relationships.

Kelly’s emphasis on accountability and discipline has been met with mixed reactions from players, with some feeling disconnected from the coach. The recent sideline exchanges with players, including heated interactions with wide receiver Chris Hilton and leading receiver Kyren Lacy, have raised red flags about the team’s dynamics.

Recruiting has also been a challenge for Kelly and his staff, with concerns about their ability to compete with powerhouse programs like Georgia and Alabama in the SEC. The departure of several players from recruiting classes under Kelly has further highlighted the struggles in building a strong roster.

Despite the challenges facing LSU, Kelly is not in immediate danger of being replaced due to his long-term contract and financial implications. While there are concerns about the team’s performance and trajectory, some believe that Kelly and LSU have the pieces in place to turn things around with time and strategic recruitment.

As LSU navigates a turbulent season and looks towards the future, Kelly will need to address the team’s shortcomings, build stronger relationships with players, and make strategic decisions in recruiting and coaching to lead the Tigers back to success in the competitive landscape of the SEC.
