Infant Dies In Multistate Listeria Outbreak Linked To Ready-To-Eat Meats

A recent Listeria outbreak associated with ready-to-eat meat and poultry products has sparked a nationwide food safety alert issued by the Centers for Disease Control. The outbreak has affected eleven individuals across four states, resulting in one tragic infant fatality in California and hospitalization for nine others.

The source of the outbreak has been traced back to various Yu Shang Food products, including chicken, duck, and pork items. Following the identification of Listeria contamination in some products on October 21, 2024, the South Carolina-based company initiated a recall of 72,000lbs of affected products.

Consumers are urged to discard or return any Yu Shang products bearing the establishment number “P46684” or “EST. M46684” on the label and produced before October 28, 2024. A comprehensive list and images of the recalled items can be accessed on the USDA website.

Listeria poses a significant risk to pregnant women and infants, as it can lead to severe infections that extend beyond gastrointestinal symptoms. Pregnant individuals may experience fever and flu-like manifestations, while non-pregnant individuals could exhibit symptoms such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, and balance issues. If severe symptoms manifest after consuming a recalled product, seeking medical attention is imperative.

Interestingly, this particular outbreak spans multiple years, with cases dating back to 2021 and six reported incidents in 2024. The timeline of infections suggests potential recurring issues in food preparation and storage practices at Yu Shang Foods, leading to persistent Listeria cases over time.

Unlike isolated outbreaks tied to specific contamination events, this prolonged incident raises concerns about ongoing food safety protocols within the company. The need for stringent monitoring and adherence to best practices in food handling and production is underscored by the far-reaching impact of this Listeria outbreak.

As authorities continue to investigate the root causes of the outbreak, vigilance in food safety measures and prompt action in response to recalls remain crucial in safeguarding public health. Stay informed and prioritize food safety in your choices to prevent potential health risks associated with Listeria contamination.
