A new discovery in the world of marine biology has shed light on the hunting habits of orcas in the Gulf of California. Researchers have observed a pod of killer whales specializing in hunting sharks and other marine creatures, including whale sharks and mobula rays. These findings were detailed in a recent study published in Frontiers in Marine Science by marine biologist Francesca Pancaldi and her colleagues from Mexico’s Instituto Politécnico Nacional.

The videos captured by ecotourists show the orcas engaging in hunting sprees, with the most recent footage dating back to 2024. One particularly striking scene depicts the orcas successfully taking down a massive whale shark, the largest fish species in the world. Despite the challenges posed by the whale shark’s size and agility, the orcas managed to outmaneuver their prey and feast on its liver, which is rich in fat.

Orcas, also known as killer whales, are renowned for their versatility as predators. They have been documented hunting a variety of marine animals, from great blue whales to sea turtles and seabirds. Some orcas have even been observed using innovative hunting techniques, such as “karate chopping” thresher sharks or beaching themselves to catch pinnipeds.

The researchers noted that studying how orcas feed in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is still in its early stages. Whale sharks, in particular, present a unique challenge for orcas due to their size and diving abilities. While whale sharks can dive to depths of 2,000 meters, orcas must surface to breathe, making it difficult for them to keep up with their prey.

In the videos, the orcas are seen working together as a pod to hunt the young and small whale sharks. By hounding the sharks and preventing them from diving, the orcas are able to immobilize their prey and feast on their livers. The researchers identified a distinctive male orca, nicknamed Moctezuma, in three of the videos, suggesting that individual orcas may specialize in certain hunting techniques.

Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the hunting behavior of orcas and highlights the importance of cultural knowledge passed down through generations within a pod. By understanding how orcas interact with their environment and prey, researchers can gain a deeper appreciation for these apex predators and their crucial role in marine ecosystems.
