Animal cruelty at a boar stud farm in Norfolk has been brought to light by Animal Justice Project in a recent undercover investigation. The farm in question sells semen to Hermitage AI, which distributes it to pig farms across Britain, some of which supply major retailers like Tesco through companies like Cranswick.

The distressing footage captured during the investigation shows boars collapsing and enduring mistreatment, neglect, and various welfare breaches at the farm. Workers were seen verbally abusing the animals and using physical force, including hitting them with hard pipes, pitchforks, and paddles.

The investigation revealed that boars at the stud farm were subjected to semen collection for the artificial insemination industry. Those who resisted were physically assaulted and verbally berated. The use of homophobic and sexual insults towards the animals highlighted a disturbing culture of cruelty at the facility.

The documented violations at the farm potentially contravene several animal welfare regulations, including the Animal Welfare Act 2006, the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007, DEFRA Pig Standards, and the DEFRA Code of Practice. These breaches include inadequate housing, neglect of injured animals, physical abuse, and poor handling practices.

Animal Justice Project’s director, Claire Palmer, expressed outrage at the abuse witnessed at the farm and called for immediate action. She emphasized that farmed animals are sentient beings and urged the public to consider a more compassionate approach to their food choices.

A barrister, Ayesha Smart, highlighted the legal obligations of Innovis and its workers under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. She condemned the intentional infliction of pain and suffering on the boars, as well as the unsanitary conditions and lack of proper care observed in the footage.

Dr. Alice Brough, a former pig veterinarian, described the treatment of the animals at the farm as shocking. She pointed out instances of neglect, abuse, and the improper use of drugs, which could lead to severe side effects and even death. The excessive force used in handling the animals, along with the inappropriate tools used as weapons, was deemed unacceptable.

The disturbing findings from the investigation underscore the need for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws and regulations in the farming industry. It is imperative that all instances of cruelty and neglect are thoroughly investigated and addressed to ensure the well-being of farm animals.
