Angie Hicks, co-founder of Angi, formerly known as Angie’s List, defied her fear of speaking to strangers to build a billion-dollar business. Despite being an introvert, Hicks played a pivotal role in establishing Angi as a leading online home services platform connecting users with trusted professionals. Today, Angi boasts a valuation of $1.2 billion, making it a household name.

Initially serving as Angi’s chief customer officer, Hicks took on various responsibilities when the business launched in 1995, including personally engaging with potential customers door-to-door. Overcoming her social anxiety, Hicks managed to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship and lead Angi to success.

Hicks, now 51, candidly admits, “I’m very shy.” Her journey from fearing interactions with strangers to spearheading a multi-million-dollar company serves as a source of inspiration for many.

Prior to venturing into entrepreneurship, Hicks rejected a lucrative job offer from a boutique consulting firm in Washington, DC. Instead, she chose to work with her former boss at half the salary. This decision ultimately led her to co-found Angi and revolutionize the home services industry.

Angi’s platform offers a range of services, from home repairs to renovations, connecting homeowners with local professionals. Despite her introverted nature, Hicks honed her leadership skills by practicing presentations and setting achievable goals to boost her confidence.

Through perseverance and strategic planning, Angi emerged as a prominent player in the $90 billion home services sector in the United States. In 2023 alone, the company processed nearly 23 million service requests, generating over $1.3 billion in revenue.
