Brown University Increases Efforts Towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Brown University recently announced a significant increase in efforts towards Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Provost Francis Doyle and Interim Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity Patricia Poitevien sent a campus-wide message on “Initiatives to sustain a diverse student body” on Dec. 4.

In response to a U.S. Supreme Court decision limiting consideration of race in admission decisions, Brown University remains committed to compliance with the law while fostering a diverse and inclusive community as integral to its mission of academic excellence.

The university has developed concrete actions focused on recruitment, matriculation, and retention of a diverse student community. New programs include admissions programming for guidance counselors to build understanding of Brown’s commitment to diversity, the creation of a new alumni relations role to engage with prospective students from underrepresented communities, and increased partnerships with alumni affinity groups to support recruitment efforts among diverse communities.

Despite public preference for a merit-based society, Brown University continues to prioritize diversity and inclusion initiatives. The Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) aims to ensure a more fully diverse and inclusive campus, advance inclusive excellence, provide opportunities for underrepresented scholars, and highlight the essential roles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the university’s success as a leading research institution.

These efforts reflect Brown University’s ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, despite challenges and opposition. The university’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and diverse environment remains a top priority as it strives for academic excellence and community engagement.
