Tayvon Andrews and David Brantley (Chicago Police Department, Multiplottr)

Chicago Men Arrested for Carjacking Uber Eats Driver

Two individuals, Tayvon Andrews and David Brantley, are currently in custody at the Cook County jail following their alleged involvement in a carjacking incident targeting an Uber Eats driver in the Goose Island area. The swift arrest was made possible through a collaborative effort between the Chicago Police Department helicopter unit and Illinois State Police ground units.

According to prosecutors, the 25-year-old delivery driver was forcibly removed from his 2016 Toyota sedan while parked in the 800 block of West Blackhawk at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 8.

Andrews and Brantley, both 18 years old, reportedly approached the vehicle, with Andrews brandishing a firearm, and ordered the driver to exit the car. Following the victim’s compliance, Brantley assumed control of the vehicle with Andrews as the passenger, and the pair fled the scene.

Shortly thereafter, the CPD helicopter located the stolen Toyota, leading to a coordinated effort with ISP troopers that resulted in the apprehension of the suspects after a crash at 87th and State streets around 9:45 p.m. Both Andrews and Brantley were taken into custody and handed over to CPD.

Brantley had an active stolen motor vehicle case in juvenile court, which was in warrant status at the time of the carjacking, indicating non-compliance with court conditions.

Charges against both individuals include aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, possession of a stolen motor vehicle (both felonies), and misdemeanor resisting. Brantley faces additional charges of aggravated fleeing.

While both men await trial in detention, CPD’s helicopter unit has played a crucial role in tracking and monitoring fleeing vehicles from the air, especially in light of the department’s cautious approach towards police pursuits to mitigate risks of accidents and injuries. The collaboration with ISP ground units has proven effective in apprehending suspects without engaging in high-speed chases.
