Food and agricultural workers play a crucial role in our food system, from planting and harvesting crops to processing meat and poultry, stocking shelves, and serving food in restaurants. Despite being essential workers, they are often excluded from federal labor protections, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and unsafe working conditions.

The current laws, such as the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act, provide limited safeguards for food and farm workers. However, there is hope on the horizon with a series of proposed bills in Congress that aim to improve the rights and protections of these workers.

One such bill is the Fairness for Farm Workers Act, which seeks to ensure fair compensation for farmworkers by making them eligible for overtime pay and ending minimum wage exemptions. The Agricultural Worker Justice Act, on the other hand, aims to improve wages and working conditions by requiring food companies to compensate workers at prevailing rates and prohibiting corporate stock buybacks.

Additionally, the Child Labor Exploitation Accountability Act addresses the alarming increase in illegal child labor in the food industry and holds companies accountable for violating child labor laws. The Food Secure Strikers Act allows workers to strike while maintaining eligibility for SNAP benefits, and the Voice for Farmworkers Act strengthens the USDA Farmworker Coordinator position to address farmworker issues effectively.

Other proposed bills include the Food and Nutrition Delivery Safety Act, the Grocery, Farm, and Food Worker Stabilization Grant Program Act, the Protecting America’s Meatpacking Workers Act, and the Asunción Valdivia Heat Illness, Injury, and Fatality Prevention Act. These bills cover a range of issues from ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions to preventing heat-related illnesses and strengthening health and safety standards for meatpacking workers.

It is crucial for Congress to prioritize these legislative protections for food and farm workers to ensure a healthy and equitable food system. By advocating for these bills, we can support the millions of workers who play a vital role in our food supply chain and deserve safe and dignified working conditions. Let’s work towards a future where all workers are treated with fairness and respect in the agricultural industry.
