Attorneys representing former lawyer Alex Murdaugh, who was convicted of murdering his wife and son, have filed an appeal challenging his sentence. They argue that improper testimony and allegations of jury tampering by court clerk Becky Hill tainted the trial and led to an unfair outcome.

Murdaugh, now 56, is currently serving a life sentence for the brutal killings of his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul, in June 2021 on their family’s hunting estate in South Carolina. Prosecutors claimed that the murders were a desperate attempt to divert attention from Murdaugh’s financial crimes, which were unraveling at the time.

In addition to the murder charges, Murdaugh was also convicted of a slew of financial crimes, including wire and bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy. Prosecutors alleged that he used his legal expertise and family connections to exploit clients for financial gain.

In their appeal, which spans 132 pages, Murdaugh’s legal team argues that the financial crimes should not have been brought up during the murder trial, as they were irrelevant and could have biased the jury against him. They also point to allegations of jury tampering by Becky Hill, the former Colleton County Clerk, who resigned amidst accusations of influencing the jury’s decision.

Despite Hill’s alleged misconduct, 11 out of 12 jurors maintained that her actions did not impact their verdict. However, one juror admitted to hearing Hill make comments about Murdaugh’s body language, though he claimed it did not sway his decision.

Judge Jean Toal previously ruled that the allegations against Hill were not substantial enough to warrant a new trial for Murdaugh. Nevertheless, his attorneys are challenging this decision in their appeal.

Hill, who is facing numerous ethics violations, was scheduled to appear before the State’s Ethics Commission but the hearing has been postponed due to an ongoing criminal investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.

The appeal also contests the validity of certain evidence presented during the trial, including guns that were not definitively linked to the murders and gunshot residue on a raincoat that lacked direct evidence connecting it to Murdaugh.

As the legal battle continues, the fate of Alex Murdaugh remains uncertain, with his attorneys fighting to overturn his convictions and secure a new trial. The complex web of allegations and legal maneuvers surrounding this high-profile case only adds to the intrigue and drama that has captivated the public’s attention.
