Disney princesses may seem to live happily ever after in their fairy tale worlds, but according to experts in the Christmas issue of The BMJ, they actually face serious real-world health hazards. Sanne van Dijk and colleagues suggest that Disney should consider implementing strategies such as mindfulness and personal protection measures to improve the well-being of these beloved princesses and help them truly start living healthily ever after.

Snow White, known as the “fairest princess of all,” faces challenges as a scullery maid for her wicked stepmother, limiting her social interactions and putting her at risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety, and early death. Despite finding protection with the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White’s encounter with a poisoned apple highlights the failure of the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

Princess Jasmine from Aladdin also faces health risks due to loneliness, growing up within the confines of her palace without any friends. Additionally, her pet tiger Rajah poses a risk of zoonotic infection and potential danger due to its natural instincts. In Beauty and the Beast, Belle’s close contact with the Beast exposes her to infectious diseases such as brucellosis or rabies.

Cinderella’s exposure to dust and magical glitter from her fairy godmother puts her at risk of developing occupational lung disease, requiring ongoing respiratory therapy for her well-being. Pocahontas’ daring cliff dive could lead to serious injuries rather than a harmonious tune with nature. Sleeping Beauty’s prolonged sleep carries risks of various health issues, including cardiovascular disease and obesity.

Mulan faces pressure from her family to uphold their honor, potentially leading to mental health issues from being forced into a life she did not choose. Rapunzel’s long braid may cause traction alopecia, resulting in scalp pain, headaches, and permanent hair loss. The authors recommend interventions such as mindfulness, psychotherapy, training on cohabitation with animals, and personal protection measures to address these health challenges and help Disney princesses truly live healthily ever after.
