Mets went wild for Juan Soto: Why a measured approach might come next

The New York Mets made headlines recently by signing Juan Soto to the richest contract in sports history. This bold move signaled owner Steve Cohen’s willingness to spend big in pursuit of a perennial winner. However, sources familiar with the Mets’ plans suggest that they will take a more measured approach to the rest of their offseason moves.

While the Mets are open to pursuing talent on the market, they are wary of being tied down by long-term contracts. Instead, they may prioritize short-term deals to avoid future liabilities. This approach could impact negotiations with players like Pete Alonso and Sean Manaea, as the Mets may prefer shorter terms over lengthy commitments.

In signing Soto to a 15-year, $765 million contract, the Mets secured a generational talent. However, this doesn’t mean they will pursue other players at any cost. The team is focused on building a sustainable roster that can compete consistently, rather than experiencing highs and lows from year to year.

President of baseball operations David Stearns, hired by Cohen to oversee the team’s operations, is known for his strategic and data-driven decision-making. While the Mets may explore trade options to bolster their roster, they will proceed with caution to ensure they make sound investments.

One potential target for the Mets could be pitchers like Dylan Cease or Framber Valdez, who are set to become free agents after the season. These players could provide short-term solutions to the Mets’ pitching staff while offering motivation to perform at a high level.

Stearns’ track record of making smart, calculated moves has earned him praise from veteran agents. While the Soto deal showcased Cohen’s willingness to spend, the upcoming decisions made by Stearns and his team will be crucial in shaping the Mets’ future success.

As the Mets navigate the rest of the offseason, they will continue to prioritize sustainability and smart decision-making in their quest for a championship.
