Sabal vs ADL – Upholding First Amendment Rights

On December 13, 2024, Judge Reed O’Connor of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division, made a significant ruling in the case of Sabal vs ADL. In an 18-page order, Judge O’Connor dismissed certain claims but upheld John Sabal’s defamation claims against the Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

John Sabal, a disabled Navy veteran known for organizing patriotic festivals and with no criminal record, accused the ADL of defaming him by including his name in their “Glossary of Extremism and Hate,” alongside notorious terrorists and criminals. The ADL’s implication that Sabal poses a dangerous and extremist threat led to his defamation lawsuit.

A Statement from Warren Norred of Norred Law

Warren Norred of Norred Law expressed his support for John Sabal’s case against the ADL. He criticized the ADL and similar organizations for using defamation tactics to silence opposing viewpoints, emphasizing the importance of protecting free speech rights. The case, which has been ongoing for over a year, is set for trial next year.

In 2023, Sabal filed a $25 million lawsuit against the ADL for defamation and injurious falsehood. The ADL’s listing of Sabal in their “Glossary of Extremists” alongside known terrorists raised concerns about their partisan motives and targeting of individuals on the political right.

The Patriot Voice, an organization founded by Sabal, hosts events that promote patriotism and community involvement. The lawsuit alleges that the ADL’s actions were malicious and politically motivated, tarnishing Sabal’s reputation without merit.

Legal Documents and Rulings

As the case moves forward, it serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding First Amendment rights and protecting individuals from unjust defamation. John Sabal’s fight against the ADL highlights the need for accountability and fairness in addressing allegations of extremism and hate.
