Moscow:

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the Kremlin on Sunday, as reported by Russian television. Fico is one of the few European leaders who has maintained a friendly relationship with Putin amidst tensions with Ukraine.

The meeting, which was not publicly announced beforehand, was confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov, who stated that it had been arranged a few days prior.

While the details of the discussion were not disclosed, it is presumed that the topic of Russian gas supplies was on the agenda. This comes in light of Ukraine’s decision earlier this year not to renew a gas transit contract with Russia, causing concerns for countries like Slovakia and Hungary that heavily rely on Russian gas.

Fico, who halted military aid to Ukraine upon reassuming office in 2023, has expressed support for peace talks, aligning with the stance of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

In a separate announcement, Fico revealed plans to attend ceremonies in Moscow in May commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
