Peshawar:

A Pakistani paramilitary soldier lost his life and seven others sustained injuries in clashes with Afghanistan’s forces, as protests erupted against deadly air strikes that led to the confrontation. The skirmishes involved heavy weaponry and took place on the border between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan and Khost province in Afghanistan.

The tensions escalated after Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities accused Pakistan of conducting air strikes that resulted in the deaths of 46 individuals, including women and children, near the border in Paktika province. Pakistan claimed to have targeted “terrorist hideouts” in response to the accusations.

One Frontier Corps (FC) soldier was reported dead, and seven others were injured in clashes that occurred in Pakistan’s border district of Kurram. The Afghan defense ministry retaliated by targeting several points across the border with Pakistan allegedly used for organizing attacks in Afghanistan.

Protests against Pakistan took place in Khost city, with demonstrators demanding accountability for civilian casualties and calling for global economic pressure on Pakistan to prevent such incidents. The demonstrators praised Afghan forces for their response to the clashes.

The recent hostilities are part of escalating border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan since the Taliban came to power in 2021. Pakistan has accused Afghanistan of harboring militant fighters who carry out attacks on Pakistani soil, while the Taliban government denies these allegations.

The latest spike in hostilities follows deadly air strikes conducted by Pakistan’s military in Afghanistan’s border regions earlier in the year, leading to further escalation along the frontier. The UN has called for investigations into civilian deaths resulting from these clashes.

Pakistan has been dealing with a resurgence of militant violence in its western border regions since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, with significant casualties reported on both sides in various clashes throughout the year.
