One-Month-Old Baby Abandoned on Christmas Exposed to Cocaine

On Christmas morning, a one-month-old baby was allegedly abandoned by its parents in a car seat on a Pecos Street median. According to an Adams County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit, the infant was exposed to cocaine during this ordeal.

Charged with misdemeanor child abuse and reckless endangerment, Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33, reportedly left their baby near their Sherrelwood apartment.

The baby’s identity has been redacted from the arrest affidavit.

A witness who found the baby recounted seeing a couple arguing in the 7400 block of Pecos Street around 8 a.m. The witness later observed a man placing a car seat on the median and walking away.

Upon approaching the car seat, the witness discovered the newborn baby inside, clad in a diaper. The man, who was walking away, claimed the baby belonged to the woman involved in the argument and instructed the witness to hand it over. The woman, however, denied any connection to the baby.

Thurman, the baby’s mother, informed investigators that she left her shared apartment with Sims following an argument about her level of intoxication. She called her mother for a ride and headed southbound on Pecos. Sims, on the other hand, placed the baby on the median and returned home, citing work obligations.

Subsequent tests revealed that the baby, initially deemed healthy, had cocaine in its system. The infant is currently under proper care and safe, as confirmed by county officials.

Thurman was released on a $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 7. Sims, whose bail was reduced from $50,000 to $2,500, remains in custody and is also set to appear in court on the same date.
