Arsenal demonstrated their resilience in the absence of the injured Bukayo Saka as they kicked off the new year in impressive fashion.

Overcoming an early setback, they secured a 3-1 victory against Brentford on the road, propelling them back into second place in the Premier League standings.

The absence of forward Saka, a key player for Arsenal this season, due to a hamstring injury and subsequent surgery, posed a challenge to the team’s title aspirations.

Facing a formidable Brentford side that had been strong at home, Arsenal found themselves trailing after Bryan Mbeumo netted for the hosts in the 13th minute with their first attack of the game.

However, Arsenal remained composed, with Gabriel Jesus leveling the score just before halftime with a well-executed diving header.

The second half saw Arsenal dominate, as Mikel Merino capitalized on Brentford’s defensive lapse to put Arsenal in front just five minutes after the break. Shortly after, Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory with a clinical volley.

This win propelled Arsenal above Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, with 39 points from 19 matches, while league leaders Liverpool sat at 45 points from 18 games. Brentford’s defeat at home left them in 12th place with 24 points from 19 games.

Despite the potential nine-point gap with Liverpool, Arsenal’s response to conceding early goals suggests they remain contenders in the title race.

“To come here and play the way we played is amazing. Of course, the most important thing is the three points and we did it, but then the most important thing was how we reacted and we did it,” said Jesus, who has been in impressive form with six goals in his last four games for Arsenal.

Arsenal’s strong start in 2024 mirrors their unbeaten record in London derbies during the previous year.

Although caught off guard by Brentford’s early goal, Arsenal’s efficiency from set-pieces and resilience shone through, ultimately securing a crucial victory away from home.

Their ability to bounce back from setbacks and capitalize on opportunities bodes well for their title ambitions in the Premier League.
