The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Art Practice program at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) takes a unique and holistic approach to artmaking. Unlike traditional programs that separate artists by medium or discipline, MFA AP artists are encouraged to explore a wide range of techniques and technologies. The program values process as a form of critical thinking, allowing artists from diverse backgrounds to engage in research-based practices and collaborate across different subject matters.

At SVA, the goal is to create a global community of artists who challenge conventional definitions of contemporary art. Each year, a select group of MFA candidates come together for three intensive summer residency periods at SVA’s NYC campus. During these residencies, students work closely with a distinguished faculty of artists, designers, writers, critics, and curators.

The faculty at SVA includes a diverse group of professionals such as Angel Abreu, Xavier Acarin Weiland, and Robin Cembalest, among others. These experienced individuals provide valuable mentorship and guidance to students as they develop their artistic practice. Faculty member Miatta Kawinzi’s recent exhibition “Numma Yah” at SmackMellon was even recognized as one of Hyperallergic’s Best New York City Art Shows of 2024.

For those interested in applying to the program, priority admission will be given to applications submitted by January 15. Applicants are required to provide undergraduate transcripts, a portfolio, a writing sample, a statement of purpose, and letters of recommendation. To learn more about the program and the application process, interested individuals can schedule a meeting with an MFA Art Practice representative.

For additional information and updates, visit the official SVA website at sva.edu. The MFA Art Practice program at SVA offers a unique and innovative approach to artmaking, providing students with the opportunity to explore new techniques and collaborate with a diverse group of artists.
