Josh Gad Had to Explain Recent ‘Star Wars’ Movies to Mel Brooks For ‘Spaceballs’ Sequel

Josh Gad recently shared a hilarious story about pitching a “Spaceballs” sequel to comedy legend Mel Brooks. The actor revealed that he ran Mel Brooks through the recent “Star Wars” sequels while pitching the idea for a new installment of the cult classic film.

During an episode of the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast hosted by Kelly Ripa, Gad explained how Mel Brooks was very involved in the process of creating a sequel to “Spaceballs.” When they initially pitched their concept, Brooks requested a detailed explanation of the more recent “Star Wars” movies, urging Gad not to leave out any details.

Gad then embarked on a 40-minute explanation, comparing himself to a combat veteran going to war in front of one person. He meticulously went through every line, beat, and comedic set piece, leaving no stone unturned in his explanation.

After Gad finished his detailed explanation, Mel Brooks complimented him, saying it “really sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse!” Gad considers this compliment to be the greatest he’s ever received.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Gad would be producing, writing, and starring in the “Spaceballs” sequel. In November, Gad confirmed that they have already completed a first draft of the script, indicating that the project is well underway.

For those unfamiliar with the original “Spaceballs,” the film was released in 1987 and parodied the “Star Wars” universe. It featured a star-studded cast including Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Mel Brooks himself.

With Mel Brooks’ blessing and Gad’s enthusiastic performance during the pitch meeting, it seems like the new “Spaceballs” sequel is off to a promising start. Fans can look forward to seeing what comedic twists and turns the sequel will bring, thanks to the creative minds of Gad and Brooks.
