Colon cancer screening is crucial for early detection and prevention. One common screening method is a colonoscopy, where a physician examines the colon for precancerous polyps. However, some physicians may overlook growths that should be removed, leading to a higher risk of developing cancer later on.

When choosing a physician for a colonoscopy, it’s important to consider their polyp detection rate. A higher detection rate indicates a more thorough examination, reducing the risk of missed growths. Studies have shown that physicians with a higher adenoma detection rate (ADR) have lower rates of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer (PCCRC).

To address the issue of missed polyps, policymakers should implement quality metrics for physicians performing colonoscopies. Publishing polyp detection rates can also help patients make informed decisions when choosing a doctor for the procedure.

In addition to these measures, patients can also inquire about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) during colonoscopies. AI assistance has been shown to increase polyp detection rates significantly in studies conducted in Italy and the U.S. By using AI to analyze camera images in real-time and highlight suspicious areas, physicians can improve their accuracy in detecting polyps.

The use of AI-based computer programs during colonoscopies is expected to become more common in the future. Patients can benefit from asking their doctors about the use of AI in the procedure, as even the most skilled physicians can make mistakes. Just like having copilots in an airplane, AI can provide additional support and improve the accuracy of polyp detection during colonoscopies.
