Here’s Why Women Struggle With Poor Sleep During Menopause

As our world rapidly ages, women are at the forefront of this demographic shift, with menopause being a significant milestone many will face. By 2030, it is estimated that there will be over 60 million peri- and post-menopausal women in the United States alone, and about 1.2 billion worldwide. One common issue that menopausal women often struggle with is insomnia, which can significantly impact their overall well-being.

Menopause brings about a variety of symptoms, with sleep disturbances being a common challenge for many women. Hormonal fluctuations, night sweats, and psychological stress can all contribute to disrupted sleep patterns during this stage of life. Colette Courtion, founder and CEO of Joylux, emphasizes the importance of addressing core aspects of menopause, such as tracking symptoms, managing night sweats, and improving sexual health, to help women navigate this transition more smoothly.

Recent research has shed light on the connection between menopause and the microbiome, the collection of microbes that inhabit our bodies. Changes in the microbiome during menopause can lead to gastrointestinal issues, weight gain, insulin resistance, brain fog, and sleep disturbances. Dr. Colleen Cutcliffe, co-founder and CEO of Pendulum Therapeutics, points out that the microbiome undergoes changes that align with estrogen levels during menopause, highlighting the importance of maintaining a healthy microbiome to address sleep issues that many menopausal women face.

To improve sleep quality during menopause, it is crucial to focus on enhancing gut health and optimizing the microbiome. Increasing intake of foods high in dietary fiber and polyphenols can help promote the growth of beneficial microbes that support hormone regulation and overall health. By understanding the role of the microbiome in sleep regulation, women can take proactive steps to improve their sleep quality during menopause.

In the quest for better sleep quality in menopause, innovative tracking apps, devices, and wellness products are being developed to address the symptoms that disrupt sleep and overall health. As women age, prioritizing sleep health becomes essential for maintaining a high quality of life. By embracing new advancements in women’s health and leveraging the potential of a healthy microbiome, menopausal women can work towards achieving restful and rejuvenating sleep in this transformative stage of life.
