Washington:

The White House declined to provide a statement regarding Meta’s recent decision to terminate its third-party fact-checking program in the United States. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated to reporters that the administration does not comment on corporate decisions. She emphasized the importance of social media companies enforcing their own rules to combat the spread of misinformation.

Meta’s founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, announced the discontinuation of fact-checking on Facebook and Instagram, citing political bias and censorship concerns. Instead, the platforms will implement “Community Notes,” a crowd-sourced moderation tool similar to X’s platform.

Critics have raised doubts about the effectiveness of Community Notes in addressing falsehoods. Meta’s decision follows ongoing criticism from various groups alleging censorship of conservative voices under the pretext of combating misinformation.
