During the bustling New Year’s celebrations, local police, Hato Hone St John, security, and Red Frogs played crucial roles in ensuring the safety of young people in Wānaka.

The holiday season in Wānaka attracts a large number of visitors, including many teenagers traveling with friends for the first time. While this may be an exciting experience for them, it also leaves them vulnerable without adult supervision.

Fortunately, there were no major incidents on New Year’s Eve night. However, police had to respond to a brawl at Dinosaur Park around midnight on January 1, involving 300 individuals, most of whom were teenagers from Christchurch and Timaru.

Multiple fights broke out, three serious assaults occurred, and some young people were knocked unconscious, with several other minor assaults reported. Inspector Matt Scoles expressed disappointment that many attendees were provided with alcohol, putting themselves in danger.

Following the celebrations, five sexual violence complaints were made to the police by visitors. A joint press conference held by Wānaka police, St John, Red Frogs, and the Queenstown Lakes District Council emphasized their collaborative efforts to address potential risks during the busy season, particularly underage drinking and drug use.

Police enforcement and security patrolled the lakefront throughout the night, while Red Frogs provided assistance, water, and free pancakes to those in need. Red Frogs national chairman Ray Thomson highlighted the importance of their presence in addressing underage drinking during the festivities.
