Subway self-defense hacks have been circulating on social media, with the latest recommendation involving a sock and a can of beans. In a viral video posted by TikTok user @talibandominicano, the straphanger demonstrated how to use this unconventional weapon to protect oneself in a dangerous situation. With over 320,000 views and 45,000 likes, the video garnered attention from viewers who praised the simple yet effective technique.

The idea is to place the can of beans inside the sock and swing it with force when faced with a threat. According to @talibandominicano, this move has been effective since the 1980s and can potentially save lives. Commenters on the video suggested alternative items for self-defense, such as rolls of quarters, D batteries, or even a billiard ball. While some found the idea burdensome, acknowledging the weight of carrying a can of beans, others recognized the necessity of taking precautions to stay safe while commuting.

This DIY self-defense tip comes in the wake of a series of unprovoked attacks on the New York City subway. Last year, an influencer advised women to carry spray paint as a means of protection against attackers. Additionally, another TikToker was seen bringing a small fire extinguisher onto the train, referencing the tragic incident where Debrina Kawam was burned alive on the subway. The rising concerns about safety on the MTA subway have led individuals to take proactive measures to ensure their well-being while traveling underground.

As the city grapples with a spate of violent incidents, including stabbings, slashings, and a rider being thrown onto the tracks in Chelsea, the need for self-defense strategies has become more pressing. The use of everyday items like a can of beans and a sock may seem unconventional, but in the face of danger, any means of protection can make a difference. With the subway serving as a lifeline for many New Yorkers, it is essential to be prepared and vigilant in the face of potential threats.
