Tokyo:

A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit southwestern Japan late on Monday, as reported by the US Geological Survey. The quake led authorities to issue a tsunami advisory.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami advisory for waves reaching up to one meter (three feet) following the earthquake that occurred off Miyazaki prefecture in the Kyushu region around 21:19 pm (1219 GMT).

The USGS later revised the magnitude down to 6.8 and stated that there was no immediate tsunami threat from the earthquake.

Despite this, the JMA advised the public to avoid coastal areas and stay away from the sea. They emphasized the potential for repeated tsunami waves and urged caution.

“Tsunami can strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or approach coastal regions,” the agency warned.
