New England States Ranked Among the Safest in the Country in 2025

If you’re looking for a safer place to call home, consider heading north on I-95 to New England. According to a recent survey by Wallethub, six out of the ten safest states in the country are located in this region.

Vermont, which borders New York, claimed the top spot in the ranking. The survey analyzed 52 different metrics across five key categories, including personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. Vermont scored a 67.94 out of 100, showcasing its overall safety.

Neighboring New Hampshire secured the second spot in the ranking, with the rest of the New England states also making it into the top 10. Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island all ranked among the safest states in the country for 2025.

Vermont stood out for its low rates of aggravated assault, murders, and non-negligent manslaughters. The state also excelled in financial safety, with a low unemployment rate of 2.1% and strong job growth. Additionally, Vermont had one of the lowest shares of seriously underwater mortgages and personal bankruptcies per capita.

On the road safety front, Vermont boasted well-maintained roads and a low occurrence of traffic fatalities. The state also had the lowest percentage of drivers admitting to using their phones while driving.

Overall, the safest states in America prioritize the protection of their residents through low crime rates, safe roadways, strong economies, and disaster preparedness. Individual efforts, such as forming neighborhood watches and working in emergency response roles, also contribute to a state’s safety.

While Vermont and its New England neighbors shine in the safety rankings, New York landed in the middle of the pack at number 24. Nearby New Jersey fared slightly better, securing the 17th spot.

The top 10 safest states in 2025 are as follows:

1. Vermont
2. New Hampshire
3. Maine
4. Massachusetts
5. Utah
6. Hawaii
7. Connecticut
8. Minnesota
9. Rhode Island
10. Wyoming

Consider making the move to one of these safer states in New England for a better quality of life and peace of mind.
