Nigeria celebrated their first-ever win at the U19 T20 World Cup after a rain-affected match in Sarawak. They posted a total of 65 for six in 13 overs.
New Zealand struggled during their innings, losing early wickets including Kate Irwin run out on the first ball and Emma McLeod dismissed in the third over.
Needing 17 runs from the last two overs, New Zealand fell short as they could only manage eight runs in the penultimate over. Captain Tash Wakelin’s boundary off the last ball was not enough as they required nine runs off the final over and eventually lost by two runs.
Wakelin contributed 18 runs, while Anika Todd top-scored with 19.
Following a defeat against South Africa in their opening match, also impacted by weather conditions, New Zealand must secure a victory against Samoa to progress to the playoffs.
South Africa currently leads Group C after a dominant 10-wicket win over Samoa. The Samoan team struggled to score, managing only 16 runs in 9.1 overs, with Nthabiseng Nini picking up three wickets for four runs in two overs.
South Africa easily chased down the target in just 1.4 overs to secure a comprehensive victory.
