A 15-year-old boy was injured while subway surfing in the Bronx on Tuesday night, according to police sources. The incident occurred at the East Gun Hill Road station between Gun Hill Road and Pelham Parkway when the teen fell from the top of a 5 train. The boy, whose identity has not been revealed, sustained head injuries from the fall.

Although the teen was with some friends at the station, he was the only one engaging in the dangerous activity of subway surfing. He was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals Jacobi in stable condition for treatment of his injuries. This incident highlights the dangers associated with subway surfing, a reckless stunt that has claimed multiple lives in recent years.

According to NYPD data, subway surfing deaths saw a significant increase last year, with six individuals losing their lives while attempting the dangerous feat. Half of these fatalities occurred between September and October. Additionally, by November 2024, there were at least 181 arrests related to subway surfing incidents.

In response to the rise in subway surfing incidents, the MTA has implemented various initiatives to deter individuals from engaging in this risky behavior. One such effort includes subway announcements featuring New York City students urging passengers to “ride inside” and “stay alive.” These measures aim to raise awareness about the dangers of subway surfing and promote safety among commuters.

Subway surfing is a dangerous and illegal activity that poses serious risks to individuals who attempt it. The recent incident involving the 15-year-old boy serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of engaging in such reckless behavior. It is crucial for individuals to prioritize their safety and refrain from participating in activities that endanger their lives and the lives of others.
