Ex-NFL GM approves Tom Brady’s role in Raiders’ potential move for Lions OC Ben Johnson

The Las Vegas Raiders are making moves in their coaching search, with former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi highlighting Tom Brady’s pivotal role in their pursuit of Ben Johnson. Lombardi, who brings decades of NFL front-office experience, noted Brady’s championship pedigree and team-building expertise as key factors that could sway Johnson, currently the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, towards Las Vegas.

Brady recently joined the Raiders as a minority owner, adding to his influence within the organization. Lombardi shared insights about Brady’s impact on the Raiders’ coaching search during an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” emphasizing Brady’s understanding of what it takes to win at the highest level of the sport.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, sources close to the Raiders believe that Johnson is the frontrunner for the head coaching position. Johnson’s success in transforming the Lions’ offense into one of the NFL’s most potent units has caught the attention of the Raiders, who are looking to reshape their future after a disappointing 4-13 season led to the firing of head coach Antonio Pierce and GM Tom Telesco.

Brady’s presence in Las Vegas has reportedly boosted the team’s appeal to Johnson, who has previously turned down head coaching opportunities. The Raiders are said to have prepared a “massive” contract offer for Johnson, but they still need to fulfill the Rooney Rule’s requirements for an in-person interview.

The timing of Johnson’s potential move to Las Vegas could coincide with the Raiders’ position in the upcoming NFL Draft, where they hold the sixth overall pick. This could allow Johnson and Brady to select their quarterback of the future, with prospects like Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward on the board.

However, Johnson cannot accept any offer until the Lions’ playoff run ends. Detroit is set to face Washington in the divisional round, with Brady calling the game for Fox. This timing could be symbolic, as Brady may witness Johnson’s final game with the Lions before potentially welcoming him to the Raiders.

Overall, the combination of Brady’s influence, Johnson’s coaching prowess, and the Raiders’ commitment to reshaping their future could make for an exciting new chapter in Las Vegas. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the coaching search continues.
