Mobula rays are fascinating creatures often known as “devil rays,” despite lacking a stinger like their stingray relatives. These majestic marine animals gather in groups called squadrons, providing a breathtaking sight for underwater photographers. The 2024 Ocean Art Underwater Photo Contest, presented by Underwater Photography Guide, showcased the stunning images captured by photographers Brittany Ilardi and Eduardo Acevedo.
This year’s competition attracted entries from over 90 countries, featuring a diverse array of marine life captured in mesmerizing images. From Imogen Manin’s close-up shot of a fish camouflaged in coral to Eduardo Labat’s striking black-and-white image of circling white-tip sharks, the winning photos highlighted the beauty and vulnerability of underwater ecosystems.
The competition also recognized images portraying nudibranchs in the Philippines, a swimming octopus in Spain, and diving seabirds in Scotland’s northern isles. A special category focused on underwater conservation shed light on the impact of single-use plastics, discarded fishing equipment, and ghost nets on marine life. Other creative categories included digital, blackwater, behavior, and underwater fashion.
Organizer Nirupam Nigam, president of Bluewater Photo and editor-in-chief of the Underwater Photography Guide, expressed admiration for the talent and vision displayed by participants. The images not only won awards but also raised awareness about the importance of protecting the ocean’s beauty.
