Adverts Criticizing Rachel Reeves for Accepting Donations from Climate Sceptic Lobbyists Appear on London Underground

Adverts have surfaced on several London Underground lines criticizing Rachel Reeves, the British chancellor, for accepting political donations from climate sceptic lobbyists. The satirical posters, appearing without official sanction, highlight the fact that Reeves has taken £10,000 from climate deniers, including Lord Donoghue, a former chairman of the Global Warming Policy Foundation.

The posters mockingly state, “Your Chancellor, Sponsored by Climate Deniers: Rachel Reeves took £10,000 from them (so far),” and modify the Labour party logo to read, “Labour: still backing oil.” These advertisements aim to draw attention to Reeves’ decision to scrap Labour’s proposed £28 billion green investment fund last year, shortly after receiving a donation from a prominent climate sceptic.

Concerns Over Lobbyist Influence

The group behind the campaign, Climate Resistance, believes that the government must prioritize transitioning away from fossil fuels towards clean energy sources like wind and solar power to combat climate change effectively. They criticize Reeves for accepting donations from notorious climate deniers and argue that oil lobbyists are hindering progress on addressing the climate crisis.

Sam Simons from Climate Resistance emphasized the importance of breaking the influence of oil lobbyists and climate deniers, especially in light of the increasing frequency of climate-related disasters like wildfires and floods. The group believes that accepting funds from climate sceptics while cutting funding for climate action is unacceptable and undermines efforts to create a sustainable future.

Mounting Pressure on the Chancellor

Recent economic challenges have further intensified the scrutiny on Rachel Reeves as the chancellor. With the need for decisive action on climate change becoming more urgent, her ties to climate sceptic lobbyists have raised concerns among environmental advocates and the public.
