Cale Makar fell just short of a hat trick on Sunday, but his performance still led the Colorado Avalanche to a thrilling 5-4 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

With just 14.7 seconds remaining in the third period, Makar emerged from the penalty box, intercepted a pass, and set up Artturi Lehkonen for the game-winning goal.

Reflecting on the moment, Makar said, “I don’t know if I’ve ever been as nervous in a penalty box scenario before. It was a weird angle for me, but Lehkonen was able to make a great play.”

The game showcased the Avalanche’s depth and resilience following the recent Mikko Rantanen trade. Martin Necas stood out with two assists and a strong performance on the top line, while Jack Drury scored a goal and played a key role in the revamped depth line.

Despite running out of steam in the second matinee game in a row post-trade, the Avalanche managed to secure a crucial win, avoiding a potential setback without Rantanen.

Coach Jared Bednar praised the team’s effort, acknowledging the need to clean up certain aspects of their play while highlighting the contributions from all 12 forwards.

Drury’s first goal with the club kickstarted a flurry of scoring in the first period, with Makar adding two more goals to give Colorado a lead. The new-look top line demonstrated chemistry and creativity, showcasing the team’s offensive depth.

New York fought back with quick goals of their own, setting up a tense finish. However, Makar’s heroics sealed the victory for the Avalanche, providing a positive outlook for the team post-trade.
