Victim count of NYC’s ‘criminal justice reforms’ keep rising

The left’s misguided efforts to keep criminals out of jail have once again led to tragedy, with two individuals charged with murder after dodging jail through a diversion program. Amari Oneal and Ali Mohammed, who were previously arrested for illegal possession of guns, were sent to the “Bronx Osborne Gun Accountability and Prevention Program” instead of being incarcerated.

This leniency towards criminals has resulted in innocent lives being lost, as seen in the recent case of a man being gunned down in The Bronx. Despite the risks involved, prosecutors continue to implement these progressive criminal justice schemes in the name of combating gun violence.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Other individuals who were given second chances through diversion programs have gone on to commit heinous crimes. Freddy Flores, for example, shot a toddler in the street after being released for grand larceny, while Kamel Hawkins assaulted a woman and later pushed a straphanger in front of a train.

The problem is further compounded by New York’s bail laws and lenient judges, who often release repeat offenders back onto the streets. Johnson Earl, with 14 prior arrests, was freed without bail after assaulting an 83-year-old man on the subway.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch has vowed to tackle recidivism with the NYPD’s resources, but true change will require reforming the system that allows criminals to evade accountability. By eliminating diversion programs and holding judges accountable for their leniency, we can make our communities safer and prevent repeat offenders from victimizing others. It’s time to prioritize public safety over misguided attempts at criminal justice reform.
