2024-25 Champions League draw, bracket, format, explained: Manchester City land Bayern Munich or Real Madrid

The knockout phase playoffs consist of two legs, with each team playing one home and one away match. The team with the higher aggregate score after both legs will advance to the next round. Away goals rule will be in effect, meaning that if the teams are tied on aggregate, the team with more away goals will advance. If the teams are still tied after the second leg, the match will go to extra time and potentially a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

With the league phase now complete, the focus shifts to the knockout stage, where the intensity and drama will only increase as teams battle for a spot in the Champions League final. Teams qualify for the knockouts based on their performance in the league phase. The top eight teams earn a bye and qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams ranked ninth through 24th will enter the knockout phase playoffs. Unfortunately, teams ranked 25th or lower will be eliminated from the competition.

Unlike previous editions, there will be no away goals rule in the knockout phase playoffs, and teams from the same country can face each other without any restrictions.
