OpenAI in talks to raise up to $40 billion at $340 billion valuation

OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence company, is currently in discussions to secure a funding round that could reach up to $40 billion. This substantial investment would elevate OpenAI’s valuation to a staggering $340 billion, making it one of the most valuable AI companies in the world. The funding round is said to be spearheaded by SoftBank, the multinational conglomerate led by Masayoshi Son, who is reportedly considering contributing between $15 billion and $25 billion to the round.

If successful, SoftBank’s investment would surpass Microsoft as the largest backer of OpenAI. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on these ongoing negotiations. A portion of the funds raised is expected to support OpenAI’s participation in Stargate, a collaborative initiative between SoftBank, Oracle, and OpenAI aimed at bolstering AI infrastructure in the United States. This initiative was recently introduced by President Donald Trump and involves significant investments in the development of AI technologies.

OpenAI, which was previously valued at $157 billion by private investors, has been at the forefront of AI innovation. The company gained widespread recognition in late 2022 with the launch of its ChatGPT chatbot, sparking a surge in generative AI technologies. In October, OpenAI concluded a $6.6 billion funding round, positioning itself to compete aggressively with industry giants like Elon Musk’s xAI, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Anthropic.

However, OpenAI now faces formidable competition from Chinese startup DeepSeek, which has made significant strides in the U.S market. DeepSeek’s app skyrocketed to the top of Apple’s App Store rankings, causing a stir in the industry. Reports suggest that DeepSeek’s powerful AI model was developed at a fraction of the cost compared to its U.S counterparts, highlighting the company’s cost-effective approach to AI development.

During an event hosted by OpenAI in Washington, D.C., CEO Sam Altman acknowledged DeepSeek’s accomplishments, describing it as a “great model” that underscores the intense competition in the AI landscape. Altman emphasized the importance of democratic AI and the growing interest in open-source technologies among industry players.

As the AI industry continues to evolve and expand, companies like OpenAI and DeepSeek are shaping the future of artificial intelligence. With substantial investments and innovative technologies, these companies are driving advancements in AI that have far-reaching implications across various sectors. The competition and collaboration within the AI ecosystem are fueling rapid progress and ushering in a new era of intelligent technologies.
