Syria’s New Leader Pledges “National Dialogue Conference”

Damascus:

In his inaugural address to the nation following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced plans to convene a “national dialogue conference”. Sharaa, who assumed the role of interim president for an unspecified transitional period, pledged to uphold “civil peace” and the territorial integrity of Syria.

He revealed that a committee would be established in the coming days to organize the national dialogue conference, providing a platform for various perspectives on the country’s future political direction. Additionally, Sharaa committed to issuing a “constitutional declaration” to guide the transitional phase after the suspension of the previous constitution.

Furthermore, he vowed to pursue justice against those responsible for violence and atrocities in Syria, whether within the country or abroad, and to implement a system of “real transitional justice” post-Assad’s regime.

The address came after a meeting between Sharaa and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, who stressed the importance of establishing an inclusive government for stability and progress in Syria. This visit marked the first by a foreign head of state since the rise of Islamist-led rebels in the region.

Following the announcement of Sharaa’s appointment, Syria’s new authorities tasked him with forming a transitional legislature and disbanded all armed groups involved in Assad’s overthrow, as well as the previous government’s army.

Discussions with the Qatari delegation also touched on reconstruction efforts in Syria, which has been ravaged by over a decade of civil war.

Several foreign officials have called for an inclusive transition in Syria, with Qatar expressing support for the country’s rebuilding and development projects.

Regional leaders, including Saudi Arabia’s king and crown prince, extended their congratulations to Sharaa on assuming the interim presidency, signaling potential diplomatic shifts in the region.

Amidst diplomatic engagements from various countries, Syria continues to navigate its post-conflict landscape, with efforts towards stability and reconstruction at the forefront of its agenda.
